A special guardianship order is an order appointing one or more individuals to be a child's 'special guardian'. It is a private law order made under the Children Act 1989 and is intended for those children who cannot live with their birth parents and who would benefit from a legally secure placement.
We are experienced in completing assessments of prospective Special Guardians, directly for local authorities. We aim to complete such assessment within 6-8 weeks to meet deadlines.
We will also ensure that prospective Special Guardians understand the permanency of the Order and assess their ability to care for the child in the long term as their needs change, mitigating risks posed by the parents and managing any difficult familial relationships.
As part of the assessment process we would aim to work closely with the child social worker and local authority to discuss the needs of the child and develop an appropriate support plan for the carers which addresses the short term and long-term areas of need.
